Background: Patient-facing digital technologies (also called "Patient Technology" [PT]) have the potential to serve a variety of functions in clinical trials, such as capturing clinical endpoints, engaging patients, and facilitating remote study conduct. However, these technologies are not yet accepted as mainstream research tools, and the opportunities, challenges, and facilitators associated with their implementation in clinical trials have not been fully characterized.
Methods: In order to understand the factors affecting PT adoption, the TransCelerate Patient Technology Initiative conducted a series of surveys, interviews, and focus groups with approximately 600 subject matter experts, including pharmaceutical company representatives, clinical trial investigators at a number of trial sites worldwide, and clinical trial participants.
Purpose: To investigate fast-track rehabilitation concept in terms of a measurable effect on the early recovery after total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
Methods: This was an open, randomized, prospective clinical study, comparing the fast-track rehabilitation--a pathway-controlled early recovery program (Joint Care(®))--with standard postoperative rehabilitation care, after TKA. Overall, 147 patients had TKA (N = 74 fast-track rehabilitation, N = 73 standard rehabilitation).
Surveys indicate that between 6% and 10% of psychiatrists report sexual contact with patients. Surveys also indicate that only a small minority of psychiatrists feel that they have received adequate teaching about this unethical behavior. Educational efforts aimed at reducing sexual exploitation of patients would be of value to trainees, patients, academic programs, and the profession.
