Extramedullary haematopoiesis (EMH) is a reactive mechanism by which blood cells are produced outside of the bone marrow to supplement insufficient production or increased destruction of erythrocytes. EMH is uncommon in sickle cell anaemia (SCA). We report the first case of focal intra-hepatic EMH in SCA depicted on MRI occurring in a 32-year-old woman with homozygote SCA and in view of previously published data, highlight the diagnostic features suggesting a differential diagnosis with other focal liver lesions including infectious, inflammatory or primary liver tumors.

The purpose of this study, based on a series of 150 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, was to ascertain the prevalence of these antibodies and to compare patients with and without these antibodies. Antinuclear antibodies giving a perinuclear fluorescence were demonstrated in 43 of the 150 patients (29%); antibodies directed to the 200-kilodalton polypeptide of the nuclear envelope were found in 40 of these 43 patients.

We describe and correlate the clinical, histopathologic, phenotypic, and genotypic findings in two patients with malignant lymphoma presenting with hepatosplenic disease. The morphologic pattern of lymphoma was that of a sinusal/sinusoidal infiltration in spleen, marrow, and liver.

HBV serological markers were present in 2 of the 22 subjects. HBV DNA sequences were identified in the liver of only 5 of the 22 patients with HCC.

HBV DNA sequences were detected in 52 of the 88 liver samples (59 per cent), including 17 of the 20 samples from patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. Presumably "replicative forms" of HBV DNA were detected in only 5 of the 88 liver samples, 3 of which were from patients with no serologic marker for HBV.
