Introduction: Transhiatal esophagectomy (THE) is used for specific gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinomas. THE is a high-risk surgical procedure. We aimed to assess the impact of postoperative sepsis (sepsis or septic shock) on the 1-year mortality after THE and to determine the risk factors associated with these outcomes.

Serum albumin and body mass index (BMI, kg/m) have been associated with outcomes following acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Aiming to assess whether the mortality risk inflicted by hypoalbuminemia (<3.5 g/dL) in this context is influenced by BMI, we conducted a retrospective analysis of AMI survivors hospitalized during 2004-2017.

Background: To compare the efficiency of three artificial intelligence (AI) frameworks (Standard Machine Learning (ML), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Convolution Neural Networks (CNN)) with a reference method (Mean radius of curvature (K)) to predict the posterior radius of curvature of the best-fitted rigid contact lens (RCBFL) in keratoconus eyes.

Methods: This retrospective study included 197 keratoconus eyes of 135 patients fitted with Rose K2® (Menicon®, Nagoya, Japan) rigid contact lenses with one or more topographies available (MS39®, CSO®, Ferrara, Italy) between January 2020 and September 2022. Two types of topographic data (indices and reconstructed maps from raw data) were used for AI analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study analyzed data from 1,189 patients to assess how severe MR affects outcomes like mortality and heart complications, finding that those with severe MR faced worse health risks over a five-year period.
  • * Results indicated that severe MR significantly increased the risk of mortality and the need for aortic valve replacement (AVR), but AVR greatly improved survival rates, particularly in patients with severe MR.
