A microglia-containing cerebral organoid model to study early life immune challenges.

Prenatal infections and activation of the maternal immune system have been proposed to contribute to causing neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), chronic conditions often linked to brain abnormalities. Microglia are the resident immune cells of the brain and play a key role in neurodevelopment. Disruption of microglial functions can lead to brain abnormalities and increase the risk of developing NDDs.

The impact of viral respiratory infection on surgical outcome of cavopulmonary shunt.

Undetected respiratory infections may adversely affect the intrapulmonary resistance after Stage 2 or Stage 3 Fontan palliation. A few studies describe a higher risk for viral pneumonia during respiratory virus season, but none of them have focused on the effect of symptomatic viral pneumonia on in-hospital clinical course after bidirectional Glenn shunt. Perceptions of multi-cancer early detection tests among communities facing barriers to health care.

Marginalized racial and ethnic groups and rural and lower income communities experience significant cancer inequities. Blood-based multi-cancer early detection tests (MCEDs) provide a simple and less invasive method to screen for multiple cancers at a single access point and may be an important strategy to reduce cancer inequities. In this qualitative study, we explored barriers and facilitators to MCED adoption among communities facing health care access barriers in Alaska, California, and Oregon.

Anaesthesia Concepts in Patients with Chronic Progressive External Ophthalmoplegia Undergoing Ophthalmic Surgery-A Retrospective Cohort Analysis.

Background: Chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) belongs to the group of mitochondrial encephalomyopathies. Anaesthesia for patients with CPEO may be associated with an increased risk due to known drug effects on mitochondrial metabolism. Therefore, the aim of this analysis was to evaluate anaesthesiological concepts in patients with CPEO requiring ophthalmic surgery.
