Nuclear speckles are membraneless organelles that associate with active transcription sites and participate in post-transcriptional mRNA processing. During the cell cycle, nuclear speckles dissolve following phosphorylation of their protein components. Here, we identify the PP1 family as the phosphatases that counteract kinase-mediated dissolution.

Molecular ions that are generated by chemical reactions with trapped atomic ions can serve as an accessible testbed for developing molecular quantum technologies. On the other hand, they are also a hindrance to scaling up quantum computers based on atomic ions, as unavoidable reactions with background gases destroy the information carriers. Here, we investigate the single- and two-photon dissociation processes of single CaOH+ molecular ions co-trapped in Ca+ ion crystals using a femtosecond laser system.

Urban forest soils perform important ecosystem services, such as the sequestration of potentially toxic elements, but some can serve as a source for human exposure if ingested or eroded by wind. Assessment of trace elements in urban soils through traditional methods is costly but portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) can allow for rapid screening for hazardous concentrations. Our objectives were (1) evaluate trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) at 460 locations in and around urban forests across three town and cities in New England and across multiple land-uses, (2) evaluate accuracy and precision of pXRF compared with traditional digestion-inductively coupled plasma analyses, (3) determine if pXRF measurements are improved by processing the soil (oven drying, rock fragment removal, and organic matter (OM) removal).

Purpose: We developed a web-based education intervention as an alternative to predisclosure education with a genetic counselor (GC) to reduce participant burden and provider costs with return of genetic research results.

Methods: Women at three sites who participated in 11 gene discovery research studies were contacted to consider receiving cancer genetic research results. Participants could complete predisclosure education through web education or with a GC.
