Congenital muscular dystrophy (CMD) is a group of rare neuromuscular disorders typically characterized by the onset of symptoms at birth or within the first two years of life. CMDs are relatively rare, but extremely severe pathological conditions currently without a safe and effective therapeutic solution. Merosin-deficient congenital muscular dystrophy type 1A (MDC1A) is among the most frequent CMDs and it is caused by mutations in the LAMA2 gene that encodes for the α2 chain of laminin-211 (merosin).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP6) and serotonin (5HT) interact to regulate glucose metabolism, focusing on pancreatic β-cells using rat insulinoma cells and mouse models.
  • - Findings indicate that BMP6 and 5HT have opposite effects on insulin secretion, and while BMP6 deletion in mice doesn't lead to diabetes, it causes subtle differences in insulin tolerance.
  • - Ultimately, the research concludes that BMP6 does not have a direct impact on glucose metabolism, but its absence may lead to gradual changes in glucose and serotonin metabolism over time, especially as age progresses.

Sugar beet is the most important crop for sugar production in temperate zones. The plant microbiome is considered an important factor in crop productivity and health. Here, we investigated the bacterial diversity of seeds, roots, and rhizosphere of five sugar beet hybrids named Eduarda (ED), Koala (KO), Tibor (T), Tajfun (TF), and Cercospora-resistant (C).

Posterolateral spinal fusion (PLF) is a procedure used for the treatment of degenerative spine disease. In this study we evaluated Osteogrow-C, a novel osteoinductive device comprised of recombinant human Bone morphogenetic protein 6 (rhBMP6) dispersed in autologous blood coagulum with synthetic ceramic particles, in the sheep PLF model. Osteogrow-C implants containing 74-420 or 1000-1700 µm ceramic particles (TCP/HA 80/20) were implanted between L4-L5 transverse processes in sheep (Ovis Aries, Merinolaandschaf breed).

Osteoinductive BMPs require a suitable delivery system for treating various pathological conditions of the spine and segmental bone defects. INFUSE, the only commercially available BMP-based osteoinductive device, consisting of rhBMP2 on bovine absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) showed major disadvantages due to serious side effects. A novel osteoinductive device, OSTEOGROW, comprised of rhBMP6 dispersed within autologous blood coagulum (ABC) is a promising therapy for bone regeneration, subjected to several clinical trials for diaphysial bone repair and spinal fusion.
