We herewith present a rare and interesting case of gastric signet ring cell lymphoma (SRCL) in a 40-year-old retroviral positive lady. SRCL is a rare morphological variant of nodal lymphomas.Biopsy from the suspected lesion in the stomach showed diffuse sheets of cells with a large central vacuole displacing the nucleus to the periphery of the cell, imparting signet ring cell morphology.

This fungus is earlier known to cause infections in the immunocompromised. Identification of black fungi at species level is more challenging by conventional methods, and hence final identification of the fungi was based on sequencing of rDNA.

Pectin rich wastes and waste dump yard soils were screened and eighty pectinolytic fungal isolates were obtained by enrichment culturing and ruthenium red plate assay. Eight isolates with higher zones of pectin hydrolysis were selected and tested for polygalacturonase production. One isolate identified as Aspergillus awamori MTCC 9166 with highest polygalacturonase activity was tested for utilization of raw pectins for enzyme production.
