Challenges for Animal Health and Production in the Tropics and Mediterranean for the next 55 years.

Tropical Animal Health and Production is a journal founded 55 years ago. It is dedicated to the publication of results of original research, investigation, and observation in all fields of animal health, welfare and production which may lead to improved health and productivity of livestock and better utilization of animal resources in tropical, subtropical and similar environments. Research is in strong alignment with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, particularly No Poverty, Zero Hunger, and Good Health and Well-being.

Prevalence and major causes of ruminal lesions in intensive cattle fattening units.

Ruminal acidosis is frequent in cattle fattening systems associated with grain-rich fibre-poor diets. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of ruminal lesions compatible with ruminal acidosis intensive fattening farms and its risk factors on farm. Rumens of 218 out of 1960 bullocks from six farms were classified in slaughterhouses, and the management practices and the type of feed were compared.

Polymicrobial interactions influence the agr copy number in Staphylococcus aureus isolates from diabetic foot ulcers.

Diabetic foot ulcers are a major complication of diabetes and are often colonised by complex bacterial communities, where Staphylococcus aureus is frequently co-present with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These bacteria interact through quorum sensing, encoded in S. aureus by the accessory gene regulator (agr).

In vertebrate hearts, the ventricular trabecular myocardium develops as a sponge-like network of cardiomyocytes that is critical for contraction and conduction, ventricular septation, papillary muscle formation and wall thickening through the process of compaction . Defective trabeculation leads to embryonic lethality or non-compaction cardiomyopathy (NCC) . There are divergent views on when and how trabeculation is initiated in different species.
