Endurance-trained athletes exhibit a greater diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO) at rest and during exercise as compared with untrained individuals; however, the mechanism(s) are unclear. The supine position translocates blood centrally and can be used to investigate DLCO responses independent of metabolic rate. We hypothesized that endurance-trained individuals would have a greater DLCO response to postural change at rest as compared with untrained and that the supine position would elicit a greater DLCO response as compared with the upright position during exercise in both groups.

Background: Pacing strategies during endurance efforts vary depending on athlete experience, race length, and terrain. In ultramarathon trail running the specific race route profile can have a significant impact on optimal pacing strategy. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between uphill, downhill and level running with overall performance and to compare the difference in pacing strategies between top 10 (TOP-10) and non-top 10 (NOT TOP-10) finishers of a 100-km ultra-trail marathon with +5000-m elevation gain.

Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate the modulating effects of five commonly used sweetener (glucose, inulin, isomaltulose, tagatose, trehalose) containing mouth rinses on the oral microbiome.

Methods: A single-centre, double-blind, parallel randomized clinical trial was performed with healthy, 18-55-year-old volunteers (N = 65), who rinsed thrice-daily for two weeks with a 10% solution of one of the allocated sweeteners. Microbiota composition of supragingival dental plaque and the tongue dorsum coating was analysed by 16S RNA gene amplicon sequencing of the V4 hypervariable region (Illumina MiSeq).

The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the effects of exercise training on muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in humans. Studies included exercise interventions [randomized controlled trials (RCTs), nonrandomized controlled trials (non-RCTs), or pre-to-post intervention] that reported on adults (≥18 yr) where MSNA was directly assessed using microneurography, and relevant outcomes were assessed [MSNA (total activity, burst frequency, burst incidence, amplitude), heart rate, blood pressure (systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, or mean blood pressure), and aerobic capacity (maximal or peak oxygen consumption)]. Forty intervention studies ( = 1,253 individuals) were included.

The diagnosis of an endodontic disease requires thorough research, collecting both clinical and radiographic information. The clinical examination includes history taking, visual inspection of the tooth and surrounding tissues, palpation of the soft and hard tissues, periodontal examination and percussion. The radiographic examination provides valuable information, but can never stand alone in arriving at a diagnosis.
