A new sample chamber was developed that can be used in the measurement of the effects of moisture on the room-temperature solid-matrix phosphorescence of phosphors adsorbed onto filter paper. The sample chamber consists of a sealed quartz cell that contains a special teflon sample holder. Sulfuric acid solutions in the quartz cell determine the percentage relative humidity in the cell and also determine the amount of moisture adsorbed onto the filter paper.

Four tetrols of benzo[a]pyrene-DNA adducts were separated using reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography. Chromatographic fractions containing a given tetrol were readily characterized with solid-matrix room temperature luminescence techniques. Solid-matrix fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra at picogram amounts of a tetrol were easily obtained.

A selective and sensitive method to detect polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) using a new solid-matrix room-temperature luminescence technique is presented. The solid-matrix room-temperature fluorescence (SMRTF) and phosphorescence (SMRTP) of PAH can be readily obtained by adsorbing a PAH on Whatman 1PS filter paper. Strong phosphorescence can be detected without adding a heavy atom.

1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) is a neurotoxin that causes degeneration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons. Recently, we reported that it also destroys dopaminergic neurons in retina and it induces the accumulation of lipofuscin. We now present morphologic and biochemical evidence that MPTP causes the accumulation of lipofuscin in the adrenal cortex.

Chlorpromazine (CPZ) binding and the binding to isolated guinea pig superior cervical of a toxic metabolite 7,8-dihydroxychlorpromazine (7,8-diOH-CPZ) were studied under resting and potassium-stimulated conditions. Maximal binding occurred more rapidly in high potassium, with binding of CPZ 10 fold higher than that of 7,8-diOH-CPZ. However, in low potassium media 50% of bound CPZ and 60% of 7,8-diOH-CPZ was retained following a 240-min washout procedure.
