Article Synopsis
  • - A 28-year-old woman had a 5.5 cm thyroid nodule that was causing local symptoms, leading to its surgical removal.
  • - The nodule was confirmed to be a solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) within a thyroid adenoma, exhibiting a specific genetic fusion called NAB2-STAT6.
  • - Solitary fibrous tumors are uncommon in the thyroid and can occur as primary or secondary to other conditions; their diagnosis and treatment follow similar approaches as SFTs found in other parts of the body.

Purpose: Cancer of unknown primary (CUP) is a heterogeneous entity with limited overall survival (OS) in most patients. Prognostic biomarkers are needed, particularly for treatment stratification. We investigated the impact of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression as prognostic marker in immunotherapy-naïve CUP patients.

Melanoma causes the majority of skin cancer-related deaths. Despite novel therapy options, metastatic melanoma still has a poor prognosis. Immune checkpoint inhibition (ICI) therapy has been shown to prolong overall survival in patients with advanced melanoma, but mucosal melanomas respond less favorably compared to melanomas of cutaneous origin.

Purpose: Current guidelines recommend combination chemotherapy for treatment of patients with unfavorable cancer of unknown primary (CUP). Biomarker-guided targeted therapies may offer additional benefit. Data on the feasibility and effectiveness of comprehensive genomic biomarker profiling of CUP in a standard clinical practice setting are limited.

The onset of radioiodine-refractory thyroid carcinoma (RR-TC) is a negative predictor of survival and has been linked to the presence of BRAF mutations in papillary thyroid cancer. We aimed to identify further genetic alterations associated with RR-TC. We included 38 patients with papillary thyroid cancer who underwent radioiodine imaging and F-FDG PET/CT after total thyroidectomy.
