Purpose: Increasing life expectancy and rising populations create new challenges for science, economy, politics, society and each individual. The bio-functional status (BFS) as a theoretical model incorporates the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) and the concept of active and healthy ageing (AHA). This study addresses the question of which the strengths and resources have the greatest positive impact on bio-functional age (BFA) and might be influencable.

Gaps in knowledge regarding the diagnostic criteria and management of PCOS in Germany: An anonymous web-based survey.

Introduction: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a multifactorial condition that can include a myriad of symptom complexes. A study in North America demonstrated that a significant percentage of physicians were unaware of crucial aspects of PCOS. This study aimed to examine the level of knowledge about PCOS among physicians in Germany.

Design and reporting of prebiotic and probiotic clinical trials in the context of diet and the gut microbiome.

Diet is a major determinant of the gastrointestinal microbiome composition and function, yet our understanding of how it impacts the efficacy of prebiotics and probiotics is limited. Here we examine current evidence of dietary influence on prebiotic and probiotic efficacy in human studies, including potential mechanisms. We propose that habitual diet be included as a variable in prebiotic and probiotic intervention studies.

The effects of chicory inulin-type fructans supplementation on weight management outcomes: systematic review, meta-analysis, and meta-regression of randomized controlled trials.

Background: Excess body weight and adiposity can adversely affect metabolic health. Prebiotics such as inulin-type fructans (ITFs) from chicory root are known to modulate gut microbiota and may improve body weight regulation.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess evidence for chicory ITF supplementation to support weight management.

Evaluating the efficacy of ecological restoration of fish habitat in coastal waters of Lake Ontario.

Ecological restoration is a common strategy applied to degraded wetlands and tributaries in large lakes. As resources are typically limited for restoration, it is essential to ensure that such efforts achieve associated goals. Using both discrete and continuous methods, we evaluated the efficacy of ecological restoration efforts on fish habitat within Canada's largest city, Toronto (Cell 2 and Embayment D of Tommy Thompson Park) relative to a control site (Toronto Islands).
