Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) is an age-related condition, which may cause open-angle glaucoma and has increasing interest since it seems to affect additional human tissues, i.e., cardiovascular tissue, skin, and still lacks elucidated pathogenesis.

In this article we report on the development of a rapid method for the fractionation and purification of a 92 kDa glycoprotein from chick sternal cartilage. The developed procedure involves ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-Sephacel, gel permeation chromatography on Sepharose CL-6B and semi-preparative SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

Glycoconjugates comprise the majority of tissue constituents, both intracellular and extracellular. Extracellular glycoconjugates (glycoproteins and proteoglycans) participate in a wide variety of interactions, through which they maintain tissue integrity.

The wells of the polystyrene microplates used were coated with glutaraldehyde followed, via a Schiff's base bond, with spermine to introduce amino groups. HA was added to the activated microwells in the presence of carbodiimide and left to bind via a peptide bond to the amino groups.

Interactions of THP-1 cells with other cells and their microenvironment are largely determined by proteoglycans (PGs), the identity of which has not been determined. Previous studies on glycosaminoglycan expression by THP-1 cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells from healthy individuals showed that both cell types secrete mainly chondroitin sulfate PGs to the culture medium, whereas heparan sulfate PGs are mainly retarded at the cell membrane.
