Issue Addressed: People with severe mental illness (SMI) are at higher risk of preventable diseases than the general population; poor diet contributes to heightened risk. Adaptive approaches designed to improve intuitive eating may improve dietary behaviours in people with SMI. Aims of this study were to investigate predictors of, and assess the impact of a nutrition program on, intuitive eating in people with SMI.

Article Synopsis
  • Early phase clinical trials (EPCTs) are essential for providing new treatments to patients with limited options, but culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and socially disadvantaged patients have lower participation rates in these trials.* -
  • A 10-year review of 233 patients at Liverpool Hospital showed that 39% were CALD, with a significant percentage living in areas of socioeconomic disadvantage, indicating a disconnect between trial participants and the local population.* -
  • The findings highlight the underrepresentation of CALD patients in EPCTs and suggest that their socioeconomic status may influence their access to these clinical trials, calling for strategies to improve participation.*

Nanoparticles used for drug delivery often require intravenous administration exposing them to fluid forces within the vasculature, yet the impact of blood flow on nanoparticle delivery remains incompletely understood. Here, we utilized transgenic zebrafish embryos to investigate the relationship between the accumulation of fluorescently labeled PEGylated liposomes and various hemodynamic factors (such as flow velocity, wall shear stress (WSS), and flow pattern) across a wide range of angiogenic blood vessels. We reconstructed 3D models of vascular structures from confocal images and used computational fluid dynamics to calculate local WSS, velocities, and define flow patterns.

Brain pericytes are one of the critical cell types that regulate endothelial barrier function and activity, thus ensuring adequate blood flow to the brain. The genetic pathways guiding undifferentiated cells into mature pericytes are not well understood. We show here that pericyte precursor populations from both neural crest and head mesoderm of zebrafish express the transcription factor nkx3.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates different prognostic scoring systems to predict survival in patients participating in early phase clinical trials for advanced cancer at Liverpool Hospital between 2013 and 2023.
  • Data from 218 patients revealed an overall median survival of 9.8 months, with a notable 22% experiencing death within 90 days, while 17-34% were classified as high-risk.
  • Among the five scoring systems tested, the MD Anderson Cancer Center score showed the best predictive ability, but all systems were similarly effective, suggesting that these scores could enhance patient selection in clinical trials.
