This paper reports a very simple and fast method to collect eluates with high amounts of hydroxytyrosol, biotransforming Olea europaea L. leaf extract by a thermophilic beta-glycosidase immobilized on chitosan. Some phenolic compounds in the leaf tissue and in the eluates obtained by biotransformation are identified.

The LOX activity was tested spectrophotometrically at an optimal pH of 6.

A retrospective epidemiological study on the first episode of stroke in young adults aged 15-44 years was carried out in the territory of the Local Health Unit No. 9 in Reggio Emilia (46,491 km2), Italy, from 1987 to 1989. 29 patients were identified: 17 were affected with cerebral infarction and 12 with hemorrhage.

Hypereosinophilia was probably idiopathic, however the presence of atypical findings suggested transition to vasculitides or collagen disease. Sural nerve biopsy in cases 1 and 2 showed features of axonopathy in both, although of different severity, reflecting the variability of clinical involvement and, probably, heterogeneous pathogenic mechanisms.
