Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has made infection-control measures crucial for preventing new outbreaks, and this study explores the use of fucoidan from brown algae, which has antiviral properties but requires high concentrations for antimicrobial effects.
  • Researchers created a fucoidan silver salt (Ag-Fuc) by adding silver ions to enhance its antimicrobial activity, leading to effective growth inhibition of certain pathogens at lower concentrations compared to fucoidan alone.
  • Results showed that Ag-Fuc effectively inhibited infections, particularly of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A virus, suggesting its potential as a preventive material against future infectious disease pandemics.
