Background: Diaphragmatic dysfunction following upper abdominal surgery is less recognized due to a lack of diagnostic modality for bedside evaluation. We used point-of-care ultrasound to evaluate the diaphragmatic inspiratory amplitude (DIA) in upper abdominal surgery for cancer. Our primary hypothesis was DIA would be reduced in the immediate postoperative period in patients with postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs).

Background: Decompressive craniectomy (DC) is considered the gold standard blanket surgical procedure for all medically intractable cerebral oedema in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). It's only proven fact is that it reduces Intra Cerebral Pressure (ICP) by providing space for the oedematous brain. Objectives: The objective of this study is to determine leptospirosis-related OOPE and OC at a government tertiary care hospital and to disaggregate the total OOPE into contributing cost domains.
Materials And Methods: The OOPE data were collected by the personal interview of confirmed leptospirosis cases who took complete treatment at the hospital in year 2009 using a prestructured questionnaire.
Primary vertebral body tumours constitute only about 5% of skeletal tumours. Their morbidity is high due to instability and neurological deficits related to the spine. The complex anatomy further highlights the expertise needed in their management.

Materials And Methods: FIRST STAGE: Validation of the questionnaire-105 consecutive patients underwent administration of the structured questionnaire and spirometry was used as a gold standard for the diagnosis of COPD. Second stage: Adults above 40 years (n = 900) in two villages of Mysore district were administered with the validated questionnaire, Knowledge and Attitude questionnaire and Fagerstorm questionnaire, to assess nicotine dependency.
