Nepal, largely covered by the Himalayan mountains, hosts indigenous populations with distinct linguistic, cultural, and genetic characteristics. Among these populations, the Raute, Nepal's last nomadic hunter-gatherers, offer a unique insight into the genetic and demographic history of Himalayan foragers. Despite strong cultural connections to other regional foragers, the genetic history of this population remains understudied.

Hunter-gatherer populations underwent a mass extinction in the Neolithic, and in present times face challenges such as explicit sedentarisation policies. An exception is in Nepal, where the nomadic Raute people receive monthly governmental individual payments. One consequence of the money transfers has been a significant increase in alcohol consumption, with nearly all individuals drinking industrially produced alcohol.

Article Synopsis
  • Early nutrient exposure during puberty, particularly -3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (-3 PUFA), may lower breast cancer risk, but how they affect development at the cellular level is not well understood.
  • A pilot study using RNA sequencing on mammary epithelial cells from mice showed significant changes in nine genes related to estrogen signaling, glycolysis, and immune responses due to lifelong exposure to -3 PUFA.
  • This research emphasizes the need for further studies to explore how -3 PUFA influences mammary gland development at a cellular level, potentially impacting breast cancer risk.

Background: Aperiodic resting electroencephalography (EEG) activity is dynamic, reflecting shifting excitatory:inhibitory (E:I) balance with changing environmental conditions. We examined developmental and cognitive correlates of aperiodic and dynamic aperiodic indices in a cross-sequential cohort of early, middle, and late childhood youth with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Methods: Two-hundred eighty-five children ages 2 - 14 years provided resting EEG during high- and low-visual input conditions.
