This study aims to modify raw zeolite with metal oxide nanocomposites to remove nickel (Ni) ions from synthetic wastewater. Novel zeolite-doped magnesium oxide (MgO), iron oxide (FeO), and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocomposites were synthesized by hydrothermal-calcination methods. A novel biochar (BC) from Acacia tortilis trees pruning waste was synthesized and tested for the removal of phosphate from aqueous solutions. The BC was prepared by calcination at 600 °C and doped with FeO and MgO by hydrothermal process. The presence of iron and magnesium ions in the modified BC was confirmed by EDS analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods.

Purpose: (1) To test whether serum bicarbonate or anion gap can be used to predict elevated lactate or mortality in emergency department (ED) patients with sepsis, and (2) to define thresholds that may predict elevated lactate and mortality.

Methods: Retrospective diagnostic-validation study of adults with sepsis treated in a 60,000-visit Midwestern university ED (2010-2015). In the derivation sample, 8 experts selected thresholds based on objective measures to optimize clinical utility.

What role can and should the university play in enhancing the civic engagement of the fifty-plus population? The interest on the part of this population in lifelong learning has already been demonstrated to be a priority. There is also a growing movement for increasing the engagement of universities with their local communities, including expanded service-learning opportunities for college students and faculty. Can universities build upon these two areas of growth to create a format that will assist in the recruitment and retention of older volunteers? The University of Maryland has been testing variations of a model that combines lifelong learning, leadership development, and civic engagement in both the United States and Europe.
