Article Synopsis
  • A complement imbalance in lung alveolar tissue can worsen COVID-19, potentially leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), with CD55 playing a key role in regulating this process.
  • The study compared lung tissues from COVID-19 patients with and without ARDS, focusing on the expression of CD55 and the structural integrity of the alveolar walls.
  • Findings revealed that lungs from patients without ARDS had better structural organization and higher CD55 expression, suggesting that enhancing CD55 levels could be a potential therapeutic approach for COVID-19-related lung damage.

Pulsed electromagnetic field stimulation (PEMF) is gaining more attention as a non-invasive arthritis treatment. In our study, immortalized synovial fibroblasts (K4IM) derived from a non-arthritic donor were exposed to MAGCELL ARTHRO, a PEMF device, with 105 mT intensity, 8 Hz frequency, and 2 × 2.5 min sessions conducted thrice with a 1 h interval, to understand the underlying mechanism in regard to the complement system.

Septic arthritis of the shoulder is an urgent medical emergency that often occurs in elderly patients and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Retrospectively, 56 patients aged ≥60 years, treated for primary septic monoarthritis of the shoulder at a maximum care hospital between 1 July 2001, and 30 July 2022, were included in this study. The primary aim of the study was analyzing survival rates and different bacteria in these patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Patellar tendinopathy (PT) is a knee condition that causes pain below the patella and affects functionality, often due to overuse.
  • A study compared patients with PT to a control group, analyzing factors like patellar height and MRI findings.
  • Results indicated that PT patients had higher patellar height, altered patella-patellar tendon angles, thickened tendons, and notable MRI signal intensity changes, suggesting potential for surgical intervention after 6 months of persistent symptoms.

: Case reports are available showing that patients develop symptoms of acute arthritis during or after recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infection. Since the interrelation is still unknown, our aim was to study the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid protein (NP) on human fibroblast-like synoviocytes and human endothelial cells (hEC) in terms of complement and cytokine regulation. : Non-arthritic (K4IM) synoviocyte, arthritic (HSE) synoviocyte cell lines and primary hEC were stimulated with recombinant NP and/or TNFα.
