Article Synopsis
  • Colposcopy is a key technique for assessing abnormal cervical screening results, but there's a shortage of trained professionals and facilities in low- to middle-income countries, impacting screening efforts.
  • The study aimed to evaluate the performance of an AI-integrated mobile device, MobileODT EVA, in diagnosing cervical issues compared to traditional physician checks and histopathological results.
  • Among 2050 screened women, the AI tool showed comparable sensitivity to physicians but lower specificity and predictive values, suggesting it could be useful for preliminary assessments of women with positive screening results.

In low-resource settings, a point-of-care test for cervical cancer screening that can give an immediate result to guide management is urgently needed. A transvaginal digital device, "Smart Scope" (SS), with an artificial intelligence-enabled auto-image-assessment (SS-AI) feature, was developed. In a single-arm observational study, eligible consenting women underwent a Smart Scope-aided VIA-VILI test.
