Cisplatin is a platinum-based compound that is widely used for treating inoperable oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in Japan; however, resistance to cisplatin presents a challenge and innovative approaches are required. We aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of targeting the chemokine receptor CXCR4, which is involved in angiogenesis and tumor progression, using the CXCR4 inhibitor AMD3100, in combination with cisplatin. AMD3100 induced necrosis and bleeding in OSCC xenografts by inhibiting angiogenesis.

Background: In October 2013, Burkina Faso introduced 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) into the routine childhood immunization program using 3 primary doses with no booster. Previous pneumococcal carriage studies showed reductions in vaccine-type (VT) carriage in children aged <5 years but not in older age groups.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, age-stratified pneumococcal carriage study among healthy persons aged ≥1 month in Bobo-Dioulasso in March 2020.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated the presence of antibiotic-resistant genes (ESBL and carbapenemase) in environmental bacteria from two locations in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, focusing on samples from a hospital and a wastewater treatment facility.
  • - Out of 180 bacterial isolates collected, 100% were found to produce extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs), while 10% produced carbapenemases, with Klebsiella species being the most commonly identified bacteria.
  • - Results indicated a significant prevalence of the bla-CTX-M resistance gene, particularly from hospital effluents, suggesting a critical need for effective treatment systems for hospital waste to manage the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in urban areas.

Introduction: Access to health services is a major challenge in developing countries in general, particularly those affected by insecurity. The availability of sufficient quantity and quality of equitably distributed healthcare workforce is a major obstacle, yet it is an essential pillar of an effective and efficient national health system.
