Modulation of the Inflammatory Response by Pre-emptive Administration of IMT504 Reduces Postoperative Pain in Rats and has Opioid-Sparing Effects.

Despite the available knowledge on underlying mechanisms and the development of several therapeutic strategies, optimal management of postoperative pain remains challenging. This preclinical study hypothesizes that, by promoting an anti-inflammatory scenario, pre-emptive administration of IMT504, a noncoding, non-CpG oligodeoxynucleotide with immune modulating properties, will reduce postincisional pain, also facilitating therapeutic opioid-sparing. Male adult Sprague-Dawley rats with unilateral hindpaw skin-muscle incision received pre-emptive (48 and 24 hours prior to surgery) or postoperative (6 hours after surgery) subcutaneous vehicle (saline) or IMT504.

An unusual cause of carotid sinus syndrome: multiple symmetric lipomatosis.

A 45-year-old man with multiple symmetric lipomatosis suffered recurrent syncope attributed to carotid sinus syndrome caused by extrinsic compression of the carotid body by the lipomatous masses. Surgical removal reduced but did not stop syncope, which was then controlled by implantation of a DDD pacemaker.

[Electroencephalographic changes during anesthesia with low-dose propofol].

The electroencephalographic changes of 12 patients submitted to anaesthesia with low dosages of propofol (4-2 mg/kg/h + fentanyl) for peripheral vascular surgery have been studied. The standard induction dose of propofol was 2 mg/kg for all the patients. The EEG recording was carried out during the whole length of anaesthesia and the EEG changes were analysed during induction and maintenance phases.
