Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to estimate the risk of post-vasectomy infections across different countries and surgical methods by reviewing records from 133,044 patients who underwent no-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) between 2006 and 2021.
  • - Infection rates after vasectomy varied: Canada had a 0.8% rate, Colombia 2.1%, New Zealand 1.0%, and the UK 1.3%, with certain techniques (like mucosal cautery and fascial interposition) showing lower infection risks in Colombia.
  • - Overall, the risk of post-vasectomy infections is low (around 1%), and aside from the occlusion technique, factors such as surgical practices and sanitization did not

Background: When working from home (WFH) became temporarily necessary for staff as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, it had to be implemented without significant organisational experience or understanding of WFH and its complexities. This study aims to determine the impacts experienced by staff who have undertaken WFH during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: This was an observational cross-sectional study using survey with a purposive sampling strategy for staff from corporate and non-clinical departments.

We summarise more than 40 years of Liberty Mutual psychophysical research on lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling and carrying, including the 7 studies used to develop the 1991 Liberty Mutual Tables and 12 subsequent studies. Predictive equations were developed based on 612 mean maximum acceptable loads (MALs), representing 388 unique conditions from 123 female and 149 male participants, starting with a maximum reference load that is scaled based on frequency, height, distance (vertical for lift & lower, horizontal for push, pull and carry tasks) and horizontal reach (for lift & lower tasks). Representative coefficients of variation are provided to allow for the calculation of MALs for any percentile.

Two young cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) given a small molecule kinase inhibitor ((S)-4-((2-(5-chloro-2-fluorophenyl)-5-isopropylpyrimidin-4-yl)amino)-N-(2-hydroxypropyl)nicotinamide [SCIO-120]) via nasogastric intubation gavage, once-daily for 21 days at 400 mg/kg/day, developed an unusual epithelial proliferative process in the renal parenchyma. Morphological and immunohistochemical characterization of the lesions confirmed an invasive malignant epithelial neoplasm (carcinoma). A similar renal neoplasm was seen in a third macaque after a 14-day exposure to a second kinase inhibitor in the same chemical series ((S) 4-((2-(5-chloro-2-fluorophenyl)-5-methoxypyrimidin-4-yl)amino)-N-cyclopropylnicotinamide [SCIO-974]).
