Diversity and Succession of Microbiota during Fermentation of the Traditional Indian Food Idli.

Idli, a naturally fermented Indian food, is prepared from a mixture of rice and black gram (lentil). To understand its microbial community during fermentation, detailed analysis of the structural and functional dynamics of the idli microbiome was performed by culture-dependent and -independent approaches. The bacterial diversity and microbial succession were assessed at different times of fermentation by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing.

Uptake of clinical yeast isolates by human epithelial cell line.

Objective: The occurrence of yeast infections in humans has increased, with the species belonging to genus Candida still being the most common cause of infection. Nevertheless, infections caused by less common yeasts have been widely reported in recent years. The main objective of this study was to assess the potential of these less common saprophytic yeasts to invade the host cell, which is essential for causing systemic infections.

In vitro antibacterial activity of Tabernaemontana alternifolia (Roxb) stem bark aqueous extracts against clinical isolates of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Background: The rise of antibiotic resistance among methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), have caused concerns for the treatment of MRSA infections. Hence, search for an alternative therapy for these infections is inevitable. Folk Indian medicine refers to the use of leaf and stem bark powder of Tabernaemontana alternifolia (Roxb) in treatment of skin infections, but no scientific report establishes its antibacterial activity.

Cytoprotection and immunomodulation in cancer therapy.

Bioprospecting and natural products drug development for cancer treatment has become an important area. Most of the cancer chemotherapeutic agents are associated with toxicity towards normal cells and tissues. Optimal dosing of cancer chemotherapeutic agents is often limited because of severe non-myelosuppressive and myelosuppressive toxicities.

Immune response modulation to DPT vaccine by aqueous extract of Withania somnifera in experimental system.

Immunopotentiation on oral feeding of standardized aqueous extract of Withania somnifera (Linn. Dunal, Family Solanaceae) was evaluated in laboratory animals immunized with DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus) vaccine. The immunostimulation was evaluated using serological and hematological parameters.
