Cytomegalovirus infections and reactivations are more frequent in people living with HIV (PLWH) and have been associated with increased risk of HIV progression and immunosenescence. We explored the impact of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) on latent CMV infection in 225 young adults parenterally infected with HIV during childhood. Anti-CMV IgG antibodies were present in 93.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of late-onset axial spondyloarthritis (lo-axSpA) and identify its associated clinical features.
  • A total of 126 patients were analyzed, revealing that 28% were classified as lo-axSpA, with notable differences like a higher prevalence in females and more cases with skin psoriasis.
  • The findings suggest that lo-axSpA occurs more frequently than previously thought and is linked to specific characteristics, such as being more common in women and associated with shorter diagnosis delays.

Post-Coronavirus Disease 2019 (post-COVID-19) syndrome represents a cluster of persistent symptoms following Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection that can severely affect quality of life. The pathogenic mechanisms and epidemiology in different regions are still under evaluation. To assess the outcomes of post-COVID-19 syndrome, we performed a questionnaire-based, cross-sectional study in previously infected individuals.

Scope: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a significant global health issue, impacting both low- and middle-income countries and industrialized nations. HEV genotypes 1 and 2, primarily transmitted through contaminated water, are endemic in low- and middle-income countries, whereas genotypes 3 and 4 are zoonotically transmitted in industrialized regions. Acute HEV infection poses severe risks, particularly to pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals, whereas chronic HEV infection leads to serious complications in those with pre-existing liver disease and transplant recipients.

Article Synopsis
  • The hepatitis D virus (HDV) causes severe liver damage, particularly in individuals already infected with chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV), making it a significant health concern.
  • A study in Romania clinically characterized 82 patients with HDV and identified that all belonged to the HDV-1 genotype, revealing connections to groups in Italy, France, Spain, and parts of the Middle East.
  • The findings emphasize the importance of understanding HDV epidemiology in Romania and suggest that migration patterns impact the distribution of the virus without affecting clinical outcomes among different patient clusters.
