Carbapenenemase producers, particularly the metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) types in , have emerged as an urgent threat in health care settings. MBLs require zinc at their catalytic site and can be inhibited by dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), a metal chelator known for the treatment of lead and mercury intoxication. Isogenic strains of wild-type and OprD-deleted PA14, were constructed, producing the MBLs VIM-2, NDM-1, SPM-1, IMP-1, and AIM-1, or the non-MBL carbapenemases, GES-5 and KPC-2.

The pathogenesis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) involves mutations in genes such as FLT3 and NPM1, which are also associated with the prognosis of the disease. The immune system influences disease progression, but the mechanisms underlying the interaction between the immune system and AML are not clear. In this study, the profiles of lymphocytes and cytokines were described in individuals with AML stratified by molecular changes associated with prognosis.

Batten disease is characterized by early-onset blindness, juvenile dementia and death during the second decade of life. The most common genetic causes are mutations in the gene encoding a lysosomal protein. There are currently no therapies targeting the progression of the disease, mostly due to the lack of knowledge about the disease mechanisms.
