Epidemiological risk factors and phylogenetic affinities of Sarcocystis infecting village chickens and pigs in Peninsular Malaysia.

The intake of food and water containing the Sarcocystis parasite has been linked to a number of outbreaks worldwide, including Malaysia. Nevertheless, the lack of surveys and epidemiological data on Sarcocystis infections in Malaysia makes it difficult to estimate its occurrence in humans and animals. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Sarcocystis and the risk factors associated with infection among village chickens and pigs reared under different farm managements in Peninsular Malaysia.

The Risk Factors of Seasonal Hyperacute Panuveitis.

Background: Seasonal Hyperacute Panuveitis (SHAPU) is an eye disease of unclear aetiology occurring cyclically during the autumn in odd years in Nepal causing blindness within a week. This study is the first of its type to investigate the risk factors of SHAPU.

Methods: A multicentric national level case-control study was performed during the 2017 SHAPU outbreak.

Representation and methods of normalisation: Narratives of disability within a South African tertiary institution.

Background: The manner in which disability is understood influences how individuals within a society, its institutions, policies and structures are able to accommodate and support people with disabilities (PWD) (Kaplan 2000). Understanding how students with disabilities (SWD) within a higher education context perceive and experience disability as well as how key players, namely, lecturers and disability unit (DU) staff, who influence that experience, is important in further shaping policy and providing a truly inclusive environment for all within HEIs.

Objectives: The study aimed to examine the narratives of disability among SWD, lecturers and the DU within a tertiary institution, with a view to better understand their experiences and required initiatives to address the challenges of disability within a higher tertiary institution.

Treatment of fibrillary glomerulonephritis with use of repository corticotropin injections.

Fibrillary glomerulonephritis (FGN) is a rare idiopathic condition linked to malignancy, autoimmune disorders, monoclonal gammopathies and hepatitis C virus. It usually has a poor prognosis, resulting in progression to end-stage renal disease within a few years, given the lack of standardized treatment. Repository corticotrophin (RC) injections are approved for use in a variety of nephrotic syndromes, but are not routinely considered for treatment of FGN.

Acute kidney injury aggravated by treatment initiation with apixaban: Another twist of anticoagulant-related nephropathy.

Anticoagulant-related nephropathy (ARN) was initially described in patients on warfarin (as warfarin-related nephropathy) and recently in those using dabigatran. Herein, we report clinical history and kidney biopsy findings in a patient on apixaban (Eliquis). Initiation of treatment with apixaban resulted in aggravation of preexisting mild acute kidney injury (AKI).
