Clinical trial conduct in special populations and developing regions: An overview of the DOVE study in pediatric patients with sickle cell disease.

Clinical trials conducted in unique patient populations or individuals with rare diseases are typically hampered by limitations in availability of qualified patients, requiring sponsors to broaden their global outreach to achieve enrollment. Engaging clinical study centers in developing regions may offer access to a substantially larger patient pool. However, they provide a unique set of challenges based on local cultures and requirements.

Bringing nursing science to the classroom: a collaborative project.

This project resulted as a collaborative effort on the part of a public school system and nursing faculty. The fifth grade student population utilized in this study focused on the skeletal, muscular, digestive, circulatory, respiratory, and nervous systems as part of their school system's existing science and health curriculum. The intent of the study was to evaluate the impact on student learning outcomes as a result of nursing-focused, science-based, hands-on experiential activities provided by nursing faculty in the public school setting.

The emergency department and victims of sexual violence: an assessment of preparedness to help.

The Emergency Department (ED) is a key source of care for victims of sexual violence but there is little information available about the extent to which EDs are prepared to provide this care. This study examines the structural and process factors that the ED has in place to assist victims. A survey of all 82 publicly accessible EDs in the Commonwealth of Virginia was conducted (RR 76%).
