Objectives: With the population of Australians aged 85 or older expected to double by 2042 and the association of increased age with the greater likelihood of having medical conditions, the potential for an increase in the number crashes caused by medical conditions is of concern. This study aims to understand the prevalence of medical conditions contributing to road crashes and the characteristics of these crashes, in order to guide development of strategies to mitigate the risks and harms involved.

Method: The sample consisted of 1,934 active road users (drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists, pedestrians) injured in crashes on South Australian roads who were admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital over the period 2014 to 2017.

Objective: Discovering that an adolescent is self-harming is extremely distressing for parents and this distress can be compounded by lack of easily accessible and well targeted information on what they can do to help. Some research has even suggested that parental distress can be an obstacle to seeking professional help. This paper describes two studies that sought to identify the information needs of parents in the immediacy of discovering self-harm and in ongoing efforts to support their child.

Background: The provision and uptake of feedback on academic performance is widely debated throughout higher education. Whilst many educators strive to provide students with suitable feedback on their academic work, it is often reported that the feedback is frequently not delivered in a prompt or detailed manner or is not acted upon by students. Traditionally feedback has been delivered in writing, and this study investigates the potential value of an alternative method by providing formative feedback using short audio clips.

Objective: The authors created a postoperative postanesthesia care unit (PACU) pathway to bypass routine intensive care unit (ICU) admissions of patients undergoing routine craniotomies, to improve ICU resource utilization and reduce overall hospital costs and lengths of stay while maintaining quality of care and patient satisfaction. In the present study, the authors evaluated this novel PACU-to-floor clinical pathway for a subset of patients undergoing craniotomy with a case time under 5 hours and blood loss under 500 ml.

Methods: A single-institution retrospective cohort study was performed to compare 202 patients enrolled in the PACU-to-floor pathway and 193 historical controls who would have met pathway inclusion criteria.

In-vehicle collision avoidance technology (CAT) has the potential to prevent crash involvement. In 2015, Transport for New South Wales undertook a trial of a Mobileye 560 CAT system that was installed in 34 government fleet vehicles for a period of seven months. The system provided headway monitoring, lane departure, forward collision and pedestrian collision warnings, using audio and visual alerts.
