Malnutrition affects up to one in three Canadian children admitted to hospital. Awareness among pediatric healthcare providers (HCPs) of the prevalence and impacts of hospitalized malnutrition is critical for optimal management. The purpose of this study was to determine perceptions of malnutrition among pediatric HCP across two major academic health sciences centres, and to determine how the use of a standardized pediatric nutritional screening tool at one institution affects responses.

Time-dependent homeostatic mechanisms underlie brain-derived neurotrophic factor action on neural circuitry.

Plasticity and homeostatic mechanisms allow neural networks to maintain proper function while responding to physiological challenges. Despite previous work investigating morphological and synaptic effects of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), the most prevalent growth factor in the central nervous system, how exposure to BDNF manifests at the network level remains unknown. Here we report that BDNF treatment affects rodent hippocampal network dynamics during development and recovery from glutamate-induced excitotoxicity in culture.

Perioperative Management of Patients Undergoing Total Pancreatectomy with/without Islet Cell Autotransplantation: A Single Center Experience.

Total pancreatectomy (TP) and islet cell autotransplantation (IAT) are complex operations that require intensive postoperative monitoring with standardized protocols. There are few studies detailing immediate perioperative management. The purpose of this study was to describe the perioperative management of post-pancreatectomy patients in the first week following surgery to guide clinicians in addressing salient points from different organ systems.

Impact of Chronic Alcohol Use on Fluid Resuscitation in Burn Patients.

Acute alcohol intoxication in burn patients has been associated with increased mortality, renal dysfunction, and difficulty with adequate fluid resuscitation. It is less clear how chronic alcohol use, regardless of intoxication status on admission, impacts patient outcomes. In this study, we examine varying levels of alcohol use in burn patients and its impact on both short- and long-term outcomes.

Nasopharyngeal cryptococcosis in a cat: interlaboratory variation in cryptococcal antigen assay test results.

Case Summary: An indoor-only 6-year-old spayed female domestic cat was evaluated for a history of stertorous respiration. Skull radiographs revealed increased soft tissue density within the caudal aspect of the left nasal cavity. CT and rhinoscopy revealed a mass lesion in the choana, plus a smaller lesion, nearly completely occluding flow through the nasal passages.
