Article Synopsis
  • Research involving human subjects must be assessed by an ethics committee, like the Commission on Ethics and Scientific Integrity at Karl Landsteiner University, which evaluates medical research from faculty and students.
  • Between 2018 and 2023, 520 applications were submitted for review, primarily focusing on oncology, psychology, and surgery; half received a final vote within 5 months.
  • The majority (77%) of evaluations were positive, with a small number of rejections and withdrawals, highlighting the need for ethics committees in addressing research gaps not fully covered by existing laws.

Purpose: The ramp aftereffect, a visual phenomenon in which perception of light changes dynamically after exposure to sawtooth-modulated light, was first described in 1967. Despite decades of psychophysical research, location and mechanisms of its generation remain unknown. In this study, we investigated a potential retinal contribution to effect formation with specific emphasis on on-/off-pathway involvement.

Introduction: Anti-Xa serves as a clinical surrogate for assessing the efficacy and bleeding risk in patients treated with enoxaparin for thromboembolic events. Evidence from the literature and empirical observations suggest that patients are underdosed in clinical practice to avoid bleeding complications. This study aimed to investigate such underdosing of enoxaparin and its potential impact on achieving therapeutic anti-Xa levels.

The use and compatibility of a dual-ionization TOFMS operating an EI source and a CI source in parallel using a single TOF mass analyzer with flow modulated two-dimensional GC (GC×GC) is described. Important figures of merit of the mass spectrometer that are required for two-dimensional GC hyphenation such as acquisition speed, ion source response, EI/CI switching, the GC transfer, and data alignment are carefully investigated and addressed. Improved fast switching ion optics allow switching in a 100 Hz frequency between EI and CI spectra sampled from the same GC×GC effluent.

Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is frequently overexpressed in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). STAT3 exists in two distinct alternatively spliced isoforms, the full-length isoform STAT3α and the C-terminally truncated isoform STAT3β. While STAT3α is predominantly described as an oncogenic driver, STAT3β has been suggested to act as a tumor suppressor.
