Early prediction of preeclampsia using the first trimester vaginal microbiome.

Preeclampsia is a severe obstetrical syndrome which contributes to 10-15% of all maternal deaths. Although the mechanisms underlying systemic damage in preeclampsia-such as impaired placentation, endothelial dysfunction, and immune dysregulation-are well studied, the initial triggers of the condition remain largely unknown. Furthermore, although the pathogenesis of preeclampsia begins early in pregnancy, there are no early diagnostics for this life-threatening syndrome, which is typically diagnosed much later, after systemic damage has already manifested.

Continuing the momentum of developmental psychopathology: Lessons learned from the seminal contributions of Dante Cicchetti.

The field of developmental psychopathology has grown broadly. Here, I draw upon lessons learned from Dante Cicchetti to highlight areas that show promise for continued disciplinary advancement. These include attention to equifinality and multifinality in the conceptualization of initial study designs, and more emphasis on specificity in accounting for developmental change.

Novel isolates expand the physiological diversity of and illuminate its macroevolution.

is a diverse picocyanobacterial genus and the most abundant phototroph on Earth. Its photosynthetic diversity divides it into high-light (HL)- or low-light (LL)-adapted groups representing broad phylogenetic grades-each composed of several monophyletic clades. Here, we physiologically characterize four new strains isolated from below the deep chlorophyll maximum in the North Pacific Ocean.

Computational modeling approaches to emotional development.

Computational models of development have the potential to address a key challenge in emotional development research: investigating not only what changes across development but also how these changes come about. Drawing on connectionist and Bayesian methods, this review considers how computational modeling could augment the processes of theorizing and behavioral research to investigate causal processes underlying emotional development. As an illustrative example, we consider how different modeling approaches could help researchers evaluate different ideas about how children come to reason about others' emotions in increasingly sophisticated ways across development.
