Rectal bleeding in neonates is an alarming event which suggests a possible necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) but is usually the only symptom of an unexplained colitis characterized endoscopically by ecchymotic mucosal lesions, the so-called 'ecchymotic colitis' (EC).
