The fovea, a pit in the retina, is crucial for high-acuity vision in humans and is found in the eyes of other vertebrates, including certain primates, birds, lizards, and fish. Despite its importance for vision, our understanding of the mechanisms involved in fovea development remains limited. Widely used ocular research models lack a foveated retina, and studies on fovea development are mostly limited to histological and molecular studies in primates.

Background: Despite strong adherence to central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) infection prevention bundles, the CLABSI rate in our academic pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and pediatric cardiac intensive unit (PCICU) remained high.

Methods: We developed a novel screening tool that stratified patients' risk for CLABSI and considered risk mitigation strategies.

Results: Of 1,583 screenings, 30% were classified as high-risk, 27% as moderate-risk, and 43% as low-risk.

Lactic acid production through fermentation is an established technology, however, improvements are necessary to reduce the process costs and to decrease its market price. Lactic acid is used in many industrial sectors and its market has increased in the last decade for its use as the raw material for polylactic acid product. Using food waste as a cheap and renewable substrate, as well as fermentation at uncontrolled pH, helps to make the production cheaper and to simplify the downstream purification process.

Spermatogenesis is critical to sexual reproduction yet evolves rapidly in many organisms. High-throughput single-cell transcriptomics promises unparalleled insight into this important process but understanding can be impeded in nonmodel systems by a lack of known genes that can reliably demarcate biologically meaningful cell populations. Tribolium castaneum, the red flour beetle, lacks known markers for spermatogenesis found in insect species like Drosophila melanogaster.
