Paleoneurology reconstructs the evolutionary history of nervous systems through direct observations from the fossil record and comparative data from extant species. Although this approach can provide direct evidence of phylogenetic links among species, it is constrained by the availability and quality of data that can be gleaned from the fossil record. Here, we sought to translate brain component relationships in a sample of extant Carnivora to make inferences about brain structure in fossil species.

Introduction: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has become a viable alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) for high-risk patients with aortic stenosis. One such high-risk group is patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH), which is known to increase surgical risk and adversely affect outcomes. This study aims to compare midterm and long-term survival in TAVR and SAVR among patients with PH.

Background: Physical therapy (PT) has an important role in Integrative Oncology programs, addressing the unique physical health needs of individuals with cancer through exercise counseling. We share our experience with the PT component of our telehealth comprehensive lifestyle modification program including data from our first cohort of patients.

Methods: The PT component of our lifestyle modification program included 6 one-hour synchronous video sessions (30 minutes exercise education, 30 minutes exercise) over the 12-week program.

Article Synopsis
  • A new implantable sensor has been created to measure the area of the inferior vena cava (IVC) to help monitor heart failure (HF) patients daily and predict fluid congestion.
  • The study included 15 HF patients and assessed the sensor's safety, effectiveness, and data transmission, finding high accuracy in IVC measurements and excellent patient adherence to using the device.
  • Results showed that the sensor was safe and effective, with improvements noted in patients' heart failure classification, indicating a need for further research into remote management of heart failure using this technology.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of changing systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP and DBP, respectively) on sinus flow and valvular and epicardial coronary flow dynamics after TAVR and SAVR.

Methods: SAPIEN 3 and Magna valves were deployed in an idealized aortic root model as part of a pulse duplicating left heart flow loop simulator. Different combinations of SBP and DBP were applied to the test setup and the resulting change in total coronary flow from baseline (120/60 mmHg), effective orifice area (EOA), and left ventricular (LV) workload, with each combination, was assessed.
