Purpose: This review summarizes the current use of extended reality (XR) including virtual reality (VR), mixed reality, and augmented reality (AR) in the medical field, ranging from medical imaging to training to preoperative planning. It covers the integration of these technologies into clinical practice and within medical training while discussing the challenges and future opportunities in this sphere. This will hopefully encourage more physicians to collaborate on integrating medicine and technology.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe show that it is possible to design corrugated waveguides where phase and group velocities coincide at an inflection point of the dispersion relation, thereby allowing an extended regime of interaction with a charge particle beam. This provides a basis for designing travelling slow-wave structures with a broadband interaction between relativistic charged particle beams and propagating terahertz waves allowing an energy exchange between beam and wave, amplifying terahertz radiation. We employ Fourier-Mathieu expansion, which gives approximate analytic solutions to Maxwell equations in a corrugated waveguide with periodically undulating cross-section.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Forecasting models predicting trends in hospitalization rates have the potential to inform hospital management during seasonal epidemics of respiratory diseases and the associated surges caused by acute hospital admissions. Hospital bed requirements for elective surgery could be better planned if it were possible to foresee upcoming peaks in severe respiratory illness admissions. Forecasting models can also guide the use of intervention strategies to decrease the spread of respiratory pathogens and thus prevent local health system overload.
