Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the outcomes of replantation surgery for amputated fingers in elderly patients (aged 65 and above) compared to younger patients, focusing on the feasibility of the procedure as more elderly individuals enter the workforce.* -
  • A cohort of 25 patients (12 elderly and 13 younger) who underwent successful finger replantation was analyzed over a follow-up period of more than one year, assessing key pinch strength, hand dexterity, and overall hand function.* -
  • Results indicated that while elderly patients performed worse on certain dexterity tests, their overall hand function post-surgery was similar to that of younger patients, suggesting that age alone should not deter finger replantation procedures in older adults.*

Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed type 1 coalition according to the classification of DeVilliers Minnaar. Piso-hamate coalition is rare, and suspicions should be raised in instances of chronic ulnar-sided wrist pain, particularly in individuals with a history of elevated hand usage, especially amongst athletes engaging in intensive hand grip activities.
