Background: Access to quality and timely care prevents unnecessary deaths and morbidity from potentially curable surgical diseases. This study describes the magnitude of unmet surgical needs in a Nigerian community and describes the experiences garnered during a surgical outreach organized by a tertiary institution in an underserved community.

Methods: This is a descriptive study highlighting details of a surgical outreach to a community in south-Western part of Nigeria.

Few studies on the prediction of skin to subarachnoid space depth (SSD) in African parturients undergoing caesarean delivery are available. We undertook a prospective observational study of 402 parturients scheduled for elective caesarean delivery to determine simple and clinically applicable formulae for predicting skin to SSD. Additionally, the impact of patient characteristics and variables such as age, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), and body surface area on SSD was studied.

Objectives: The study investigated the association between intraocular pressure changes and clinical ocular signs in 51 patients with orbitozygomatic complex fractures. Diplopia, chemosis, enophthalmos, subconjunctival haemorrhage, periorbital ecchymosis and extraocular muscles entrapment were assessed.

Study Design: Intraocular pressure was measured in mmHg at different time intervals with Perkins and Goldman tonometers; within first 3 days of injury (T1), 24 h post-elevation within 3-14 days of injury (T2), 1 month after initial treatment assessment (T3), 2 months after initial treatment assessment (T4), and 3 months after initial treatment assessment (T5).
