The popular genetic model organism Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) encodes 34 globins, whereby the few that are well-characterized show divergent properties besides the typical oxygen carrier function. Here, we present a biophysical characterization and expression analysis of C.

Beside activity, electrocatalyst stability is gaining in importance. The most common degradation mechanism is the loss of the active surface area due to nanoparticle growth via coalescence/agglomeration. We propose a particle confinement strategy via vertically oriented graphene deposition to overcome degradation of the nanoparticles.

Structural information on free transition metal doped aluminum clusters, Al(n)TM(+) (TM = Ti, V, Cr), was obtained by studying their ability for argon physisorption. Systematic size (n = 5-35) and temperature (T = 145-300 K) dependent investigations reveal that bare Al(n)(+) clusters are inert toward argon, while Al(n)TM(+) clusters attach one argon atom up to a critical cluster size. This size is interpreted as the geometrical transition from surface-located dopant atoms to endohedrally doped aluminum clusters with the transition metal atom residing in an aluminum cage.

The structures of neutral and cationic Cr3On0,+ (n = 0-3) clusters are calculated with density functional theory employing the BLYP and BP86 functionals. Gas-phase CrnOm clusters are produced by laser vaporization and characterized with time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The ionization energies of Cr3On (n = 0-2) are determined with threshold photoionization spectroscopy using tunable laser light in the 4.

General principles for designing stable highly symmetrical clusters are proposed. This approach takes advantage of both the extra stability of cage aromaticity and the good geometrical balance between the outer cage and the endohedral atom. The applicability of these design principles was confirmed by gas-phase experimental observations on group 14 element cages with endohedral Al's and also is illustrated by many literature examples of diverse systems.
