Background: The spread of artemisinin resistant malaria from SE Asia to the rest of the world remains a threat that will only be ended by eliminating malaria from the region. Novel control approaches are required to mitigate this threat. Spatial repellents (SR) are one such approach.

The fact that many people become infected with malaria when they are outside has prompted the development of 'spatial' rather than topical repellents.
