Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers utilized a fine-mapping approach blending data from a diverse genome-wide association study and expression analysis from different ancestry groups to identify 14 potential causal genes linked to AF.
  • * By silencing a major AF-related gene using CRISPR in heart cells, the study revealed disruptions in pathways crucial for heart tissue and conduction system development.

Background: Cardiac surgery triggers sterile innate immune responses leading to postoperative complications. Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) is associated with short-term inflammation-mediated outcomes after cardiac surgery. The impact of CH on long-term postoperative outcomes remains unknown.

Aims: The concept of "atrial cardiomyopathy" (AtCM) had been percolating through the literature since its first mention in 1972. Since then, publications using the term were sporadic until the decision was made to convene an expert working group with representation from four multinational arrhythmia organizations to prepare a consensus document on atrial cardiomyopathy in 2016 (EHRA/HRS/APHRS/SOLAECE expert consensus on atrial cardiomyopathies: definition, characterization, and clinical implication). Subsequently, publications on AtCM have increased progressively.

Age is a major risk-factor for atrial fibrillation (AF) and associated hospitalisations. With increasing emphasis on rhythm control, pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is often suggested, even to elderly patients (≥ 75 years of age). Efficacy of PVI aiming at rhythm control is limited in persistent AF.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and ventricular fibrillation (VF) episodes exhibit varying durations, with some spontaneously ending quickly while others persist. A quantitative framework to explain episode durations remains elusive. We hypothesized that observable self-terminating AF and VF episode lengths, whereby durations are known, would conform with a power law based on the ratio of system size and correlation length ([Formula: see text].
