Background: We previously reported that the balance of short-chain fatty acids and lactic acid in feces affects postoperative infectious complications after major hepatectomy. However, the effect remains unclear in pancreaticoduodenectomy.

Methods: Preoperative fecal samples were collected from 210 patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy at 2 institutions between January 2019 and June 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate the outcomes of colorectal cancer patients who underwent either partial or total cystectomy due to bladder invasion, analyzing both oncological and functional results.
  • Out of 107 patients, most underwent partial resection, with significant differences in bladder invasion rates and post-surgery complications between the two groups.
  • Results showed that while partial cystectomy had a lower urinary-specific morbidity rate and better bladder function preservation, both procedures had similar long-term cancer recurrence rates.

The Joint Committee for Nationwide Survey on colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) was established to improve treatment outcomes in patients with CRLM. The aim of this study was to evaluate the transition in the characteristics and treatment strategies of patients with CRLM and to analyze the prognostic factors. The data of 5085 patients newly diagnosed between 2013 and 2017 were compared with those of 3820 patients from 2005 and 2007.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compared the incidence of incisional hernias in patients who had their surgical specimen removed through two different incisions: Pfannenstiel incision (PI) and midline incision (MI).
  • A total of 370 patients were analyzed, and after adjusting for variables using propensity score matching, 71 patients from each group were compared, revealing that the PI method had no hernia cases while the MI method had a 14% incidence.
  • The findings suggest that using the PI for specimen extraction is better due to the significantly lower occurrence of incisional hernias and no increase in complication rates.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of intraoperative frozen section analysis (FSA) of pancreatic transection margins on the prognosis of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC).
  • A total of 311 patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy were analyzed, with findings categorized into three groups based on the first FSA results: negative (1FSA-R0), carcinoma in situ (1FSA-CIS), and invasive carcinoma (1FSA-IC).
  • Results showed similar median survival rates for 1FSA-R0 and 1FSA-CIS, indicating that additional resections may be justified for 1FSA-CIS, while 1FSA-IC was significantly associated with poorer survival
