One hundred and ninety-five consecutive surgically treated Russian colorectal cancer (CRC) patients were retrospectively analyzed for the presence of mutations in KRAS, NRAS, BRAF and PIK3CA genes as well as for the microsatellite instability status. Comparison between high-resolution melting analysis, co-amplification at lower denaturation temperature PCR, DNA sequencing and allele-specific PCR for the detection of KRAS codon 12/13 mutations revealed that none of these methods alone provided satisfactory results in 100 % of the analyzed cases; this experience supports the use of more than one mutation-detecting technique at least in some circumstances. The authors propose an individual decision on the character of treatment: strangulated intestinal obstruction should be operated immediately after making the diagnosis; treatment of adhesive intestinal obstruction should be started with conservative methods. Successful treatment, depending on the anamnesis and state of the patient, allows planned total enterolysis or conservative treatment of the peritoneal commissures. If the conservative treatment is not a success, the patients should be operated after normalization of homeostasis, and better in day time.

Freshwater sponges include six extant families which belong to the suborder Spongillina (Porifera). The taxonomy of freshwater sponges is problematic and their phylogeny and evolution are not well understood. Sequences of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) of 11 species from the family Lubomirskiidae, 13 species from the family Spongillidae, and 1 species from the family Potamolepidae were obtained to study the phylogenetic relationships between endemic and cosmopolitan freshwater sponges and the evolution of sponges in Lake Baikal.
