Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients suffering from stroke. Intermittent pneumatic compression devices (IPCs) and geko™ devices are used to reduce the risk of VTE in patients who have suffered an acute stroke. Correct use of the devices is essential for achieving the reduced risk of VTE.

Leucine - rich repeat containing 45 protein (LRRC45) protein localizes at the proximal end of centrioles and forms a component of the proteinaceous linker between them, with an important role in centrosome cohesion. In addition, a pool of it localizes at the distal appendages of the modified parent centriole that forms the primary cilium and it has essential functions in the establishment of the transition zone and axonemal extension during early ciliogenesis. Here, we describe three individuals from two unrelated families with severe central nervous system anomalies.

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an immune-mediated interstitial lung disease (ILD) relating to specific occupational, environmental or medication exposures. Disease behaviour is influenced by the nature of exposure and the host response, with varying degrees of lung inflammation and fibrosis seen within individuals. The differentiation of HP from other ILDs is important due to distinct causes, pathophysiology, prognosis and management implications.

Influenza D virus (IDV), the cattle flu virus, is a novel multi-host RNA virus, circulating silently worldwide, with widespread seropositivity among US cattle, reaching up to 80% in some areas raising a potential threat of cattle-to-human transmission. Currently, five genetic lineages of IDV have been described, but their evolutionary dynamics have not been studied. Although IDV was first identified in 2011, our comprehensive analysis of all known IDV genomes suggests that the earliest ancestors of IDV likely to have evolved towards the end of the 20 century and D/OK lineage appears to have emerged in 2005.
