Article Synopsis
  • A study examined the risk of primary hyperparathyroidism in patients treated for Graves' disease with either radioactive iodine (RAI) or thyroidectomy over a 22-year period.
  • Researchers found that hypercalcemia, or elevated calcium levels, occurred more frequently in the RAI group (10%) compared to those who had thyroidectomy (6%), suggesting a potential link to RAI treatment.
  • The evaluation for primary hyperparathyroidism was often inadequate, as 63% of patients with hypercalcemia had an "incomplete workup," indicating a significant possibility of underdiagnosis following RAI treatment.

Introduction: Premenopausal women with high-risk hormone receptor (HR)-positive breast cancer often receive ovarian function suppression (OFS) and anti-estrogen therapy which induces near complete estrogen deprivation (NCED). This treatment improves recurrence-free survival but may increase cardiovascular risk. We sought to identify patterns of cardiovascular care and outcomes in premenopausal women with operable breast cancer.

Nitrous oxide abuse may cause functional cobalamin deficiency and subsequent damage to the peripheral nerves, the spinal cord, and the brain, a symptom complex best described by the term cobalamin neuropathy. Here, we report a case of cobalamin neuropathy with uncommon cerebral symptomatology following nitrous oxide intoxication and contextualize the symptomatology. A 22-year-old male with a history of mixed drug dependency presented at the emergency room after inhaling six 615 g cylinders, equal to ~1800 L, of nitrous oxide daily for two weeks.
