Aim: To describe the timing and causes of post-neonatally acquired cerebral palsy (PNN-CP) and map the implementation of relevant preventive strategies against cause-specific temporal trends in prevalence.
Methods: Data for a 1975-2014 birth cohort of children with PNN-CP (brain injury between 28 days and 2 years of age) were drawn from the Victorian and Western Australian CP Registers. Descriptive statistics were used to report causal events and timing.
Models and simulations are used in veterinary education to allow students to practice surgical skills in order to obtain clinical competence. Further development of models is also driven by the requirement of veterinary institutions to reduce the use of animal patients in teaching (live or cadaver). Esophagostomy tube placement is a common therapeutic procedure performed in companion animal critical care cases, and a model was developed to help teach this skill.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAmong the various classes of fast-adapting (FA) tactile afferents found in hairy and glabrous skin, FA2 afferents, associated with Pacinian corpuscles (PC), preferentially signal high-frequency sinusoidal events corresponding with vibration percepts, in contrast to other classes associated with lower frequency flutter percepts. The FA2-PC complex is also uniquely sensitive to distant sources of vibration mechanically transmitted through anatomical structures. In the present study, we used a pulsatile waveform to assess the contribution of FA2 afferents to the perception of flutter-range frequency stimuli (~ 20 Hz) in combination with two methods to abolish local FA inputs and force a dependence on FA2 via transmission from adjacent structures.

Proficiency of this skill is difficult to achieve, due to limited exposure to suitable live patients, and animal welfare considerations limiting repeated performance on the same bitch. Models have been beneficial in allowing undergraduates to perform a range of ultrasound techniques without the use of live animals.
