Understanding the interplay between biology and mechanics in tissue architecture is challenging, particularly in terms of 3D tissue organization. Addressing this challenge requires a biological model enabling observations at multiple levels from cell to tissue, as well as theoretical and computational approaches enabling the generation of a synthetic model that is relevant to the biological model and allowing for investigation of the mechanical stresses experienced by the tissue. Using a monolayer human colon epithelium organoid as a biological model, freely available tools (Fiji, Cellpose, Napari, Morphonet, or Tyssue library), and the commercially available Abaqus FEM solver, we combined vertex and FEM approaches to generate a comprehensive viscoelastic finite element model of the human colon organoid and demonstrated its flexibility.

Over the past 20 years, hybrid plasmonics for nanoemitters of light or for nanoabsorbers, based on weak or strong coupling between metallic nanocavities and active media (emissive or absorbing entities), have given rise to important research efforts. One of the main current challenges is the control of the nanoscale spatial distribution and associated symmetry of the active medium in the vicinity of the metallic nanoparticles. In this review, we first recall the main principles of weak and strong coupling by stressing the importance of controlling the spatial distribution of the active medium and present the main approaches developed for achieving this control.

Light-driven hydrogen evolution is a promising means of sustainable energy production to meet global energy demand. This study investigates the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of nickel-substituted rubredoxin (NiRd), an artificial hydrogenase mimic, covalently attached to a ruthenium phototrigger (RuNiRd). By systematically modifying the para-substituents on Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes, we sought to optimize the intramolecular electron transfer processes within the RuNiRd system.

The thermal dynamics and transient optical response of individual gold nanodisks supported on thin silicon nitride membranes were investigated using optical time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy and finite-element modeling. The effect of reducing the membrane thickness from 50 nm to 15 nm on the nanodisk thermal dynamics was explored. A significant deceleration of the nanodisk cooling kinetics was observed, and linked to a quasi-two-dimensional heat diffusion process within the 15 nm thick membrane, without detectable modification of its thermal conductivity.

We report on a novel, to the best of our knowledge, active probe for scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM). A fluorescent nanosphere, acting as the secondary source, is grafted in an electrostatic manner at the apex of a polymer tip integrated into the extremity of an optical fiber. Thanks to the high photostability and sensitivity of the secondary source, the near-field interaction with a gold nanocube is investigated.
