Natural products are ligands and in vitro inhibitors of Alzheimer's disease (AD) tau. Dihydromyricetin (DHM) bears chemical similarity to known natural product tau inhibitors. Despite having signature polyphenolic character, DHM is ostensibly hydrophobic owing to intermolecular hydrogen bonds that shield hydrophilic phenols.

Methods: We describe AD neuropathology in mT21 including amyloid beta, phosphorylated tau, astrogliosis, microgliosis, α-synuclein, and TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) in cerebral cortex, hippocampal subregions, and amygdala using immunohistochemistry.
Results: We observed high AD neuropathologic change with a score of A3B3C3.
Fibril-type aggregates of tau occur in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dozens of tauopathies. Fibrils catalyze aggregation by prion-like seeding, which in part underlies disease progression. Seeding by recombinant and brain-derived tau fibrils is measured using biosensor cells that express aggregation-prone tau mutants fused with fluorescent reporter proteins.
