A comprehensive investigation on modified cellulose nanocrystals and their films properties.

In this work, we aimed to tune cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) properties by introducing different functional groups (aldehyde, carboxyl, silane, and ammonium groups) on the surface through different chemical modifications. These functional groups were obtained by combining: the periodate oxidation with TEMPO-oxidation, aminosylation or cationization. CNCs produced and their films were characterized to elucidate their performances.

What affects the quality of economic analysis for life-saving investments?

Economic analysis of life-saving investments in both the public and private sectors has the potential to dramatically improve longevity and the quality of life, but only if the analyses on which decisions are based are done well. In this article, we analyze a data set that provides information on the content and quality of journal articles that measure the cost-effectiveness of life-saving investments. Our study is the first to provide a detailed multivariate analysis of factors affecting objective measures of quality.

Effects of caregiving, gender, and race on the health, mutuality, and social supports of older couples.

Objectives: The purpose of this article is to report caregiving, gender, and race effects on the physical health, social supports, and mutuality of older couples.

Methods: The study involves cross-sectional results from a longitudinal study of 234 older couples, 118 in caregiving situations and 116 comparison couples. Spouses were interviewed in their homes.

Disability and depressive symptoms in the elderly: the effects of instrumental support and its subjective appraisal.

This article explores the buffering effect of social support on depressive symptoms in a community sample of elderly with varying levels of disability. Baseline interviews were conducted in respondents' homes. Results show that higher levels of disability are associated with higher levels of depression.
